Stove Top Cast Iron Skillet Bread

Kathy and I were talking about the Turkish Bread we use to buy when we were stationed in Turkey many years ago.  This made me look for some stove top versions on the internet I found several and here is my version that works well.  I have a photo and the ingredients below.

I am always looking for simple things I can cook outside on my Coleman white gas stove with few ingredients.  Normally I do the outside cooking and Kathy does the fancy stuff inside.  For this I should have used a smaller pan and it would have came out round.  Took about 1 hour and 20 min from start to finish, 60 minutes was for letting the dough rise.

                                                                    2 cups flour

                                                                    1 1/4 cup water

                                                                    1tbs yeast

                                                                    1tsp salt

                                                                    1tsp sugar

                                                                    Dash of dry dill

Warm water and yeast in a bowl, add flour, salt and sugar hand mix and roll into a ball.  Cover bowl and let sit for 60 minutes.  Roll out into a log and cut into 3 or 4 pieces and flatten (sprinkle with Dill) to fit a small cast iron pan. Put one flat bread in to a well oiled and heated cast iron pan.  Depending on the heat 1 to 2 minutes flip for 1 to 2 more then remove and add another.  Once all are done sit back and enjoy.  No oven needed:)

DIY Rain Guards for your screens

In our old RV I had bought rain guards for our windows so we could leave some windows open for ventilation while in town and not have to worry about a rain shower while we were out.  So in my search for some of them I learned they stopped making them in 2014.  Here is my first attempt at making my own.

These are made out of cardboard which I had around the home front.  I will try them out for the summer, may add white duct tape over them so they will survive a rain shower or two.

 In the above photo you can see my DIY insert with two vents open, I can just slide the window down and they close.  The cardboard just fits in between the window and screen which gives it strength.

Here you see our biggest window by the dining table, white tape would make this one look a lot better:)  For this one I have to slide open the screen and either take the guard out for travel, or to close the vents then the window for travel. 

 Here I am trimming the cardboard to fit the window these are very easy to make and hopefully use for the summer.

Finally I cut in the vents which I hope will allow air in and keep rain out, at least most of it:)

6/20 update.  I have added one to our slide out bedroom and white duct tapped them all so they are some what water resistant. These along with vent covers over our three roof vents have increased air flow several times over in rainy weather, without running the AC.

Sheep Drive Near Meeker Colorado

Sheep Drive Near Meeker Colorado on our way down to Grand Junction, Colorado.  This drive had several sheep in this drive.  I like these road drives better then cattle road drives, cows can put dents in your vehicles.  When we took the photo we were in the middle of the drive.  With all the fences now out west drivers must yield to live stock on roadways.  Hit one and you are responsible and will have to pay the rancher/sheep herder, especially if there is an "open range" sign along the road.

Aero Garden Update

Our Aero Garden is now  producing Tomatoes and Lettuce so we had our first salads with both of them here.

 The gardens are doing well and so are well.  We transplanted the last two herbs to dirt to get an extra day without watering.  Have an order in for a water reservoir once they are back in stock which should give us a few more days on both.

I tried several different fixes and this was the best I have used.  I bought the swing down step support on amazon and it works great.  If I forget to snap it in the up position and start the RV.  The steps automatically come in and this device swings out as well as in so does not strain the step motor.  I can now snap it in the up position or if I forget it is 12 inches above the road so I am still road safe.

 You can see the shaft and the base in this photo you twist the shaft out or in for height adjustments.

Here is looking up under the bottom step.  You can see how the shaft is on a pin to allow in and out movement.  You can also see to the right where the shaft snaps in for storage.  A final note I added a piece of 2X4 to fill the void under the step foe ease of shaft movement.

Weight of the RV was a Suprise

Weight of the RV was a surprise to me.  I now see why I read that about 55% of all RV's can be overweight.  Ours was 100 pounds over.  What a surprise!  I adjusted our weight so it is under weight now.  Just because there is room does not mean we should fill that room, lesson leaned:)  Had to cut down on the cast iron and my tools a bit but we made it through our outside compartments.  I need to get with Kathy and work on the inside next, wish me luck:)

This also reminds me to keep tabs on our tires as well.  We have our wireless tire monitors and feel good with them always on when we are on the road.  The tires are now four years old and in good shape.  I remember reading that we should look at replacements every 5-7 years do to age, so only another couple more years on the tires.  I also am using tire covers when I remember them:)

Just had our generator gone over and a RV tune up and belts and hoses checked as well,they were fine.  I will be stopping at NAPA to pick up a set of spare belts and hoses for on the road spares.  Finally resealed the roof seams as well.  We are ready for summer.

Tomato on our Aero Garden

Tomato on our Aero Garden at 45 days.  We found an additional five after these photos, will let you know when we pick our first ones.  Also we have been eating 2 to 3 small salads each, for the past two weeks.

 In the top center you you see a round one to the left of the flowers and the photo below look at the  center and near the bottom for the second one.

Above shows part of both areo gardens whit two herbs and I have a self watering unit on the way.  Once set up it will let us stay away for 3 to 4 days at a time when the plants get to this stage or larger.
